- The overriding theme
of the training sessions will be to fill a gap in most people's education
regarding disabled members of the community, focusing on the unsighted section.
- The training will home
in on the ways to treat, greet, and behave towards unsighted people. The main
points being, how to approach unsighted people, how it is possible to assist
unsighted people either by offering a guiding arm, helping them to seating,
making choices at restaurants or cafes, passing items to, describing items,
terrain etc. Helping them to get where they want to be, which bus etc. Filling
in forms - how? Use of cash point - how? How not to treat unsighted people;
eg. never speak to an unsighted person without making it clear who you are
and that you are speaking to them, always to remember that eye contact is
one of our most used and relied on attributes and that this is lost on visually
impaired people. Never walk away from an unsighted person without making it
clear that you are going, taking to midair is both annoying and embarrassing.
- I believe that the majority
of people have never actually held a conversation with an unsighted person,
with the exception of a possible elderly relative with cataracts.
- As part of an overall
disability training programme have you considered an unsighted speaker? I
would be willing to follow any criteria, answer any impromptu questions and
generally help your employees to see the world as I see it, or more to the
point, do not see it. One of the purposes of my training is to fill a gap
in your employees' education, namely communication directly with an unsighted
person. I am hoping that by including a one to one discussion in my talk a
greater understanding of the problems facing a visibly impaired person will
be reached. My talks will include a small amount of role-play and a lot of
discussion.
- Training costs are negotiable
